Picky Eating in Toddlers: A Gentle Guide for Worried Parents
If you’ve ever served dinner only to have your toddler declare “no!”, push the plate away, or act like the broccoli personally offended them, welcome to the club. Picky eating is one of the most common toddler challenges, and it’s something almost every family goes through at some point.
At Budding Sproutz Miniversity, we see these patterns every day, and we want you to know this:
🌼 picky eating is normal
🌼 it’s not your fault
🌼 it gets better with time, patience, and gentle routines
Here’s a practical, realistic guide to navigating picky eating with confidence, from your trusted East Vic Park childcare centre.
Why Toddlers Become Picky Eaters
Picky eating happens for lots of reasons, including:
- Rapid developmental changes.
- Wanting control.
- Sensory sensitivities.
- Teething.
- Tiredness or overstimulation.
- Changing appetite.
- Fear of new foods (food neophobia).
Toddlers also eat based on emotion, routine, and familiarity, not nutritional logic. So no, they’re not trying to test you… they’re just trying to figure out their world.
1. Keep Mealtimes Calm and Pressure-Free
The more pressure children feel to eat, the less likely they are to try new foods. Instead of:
❌ “Just one bite.”
❌ “You have to finish this.”
Try:
🌿 “You don’t have to eat it.”
🌿 “This food is here if you feel ready to try.”
Taking away pressure often leads to more willingness, not less.
2. Serve One “Safe Food” With Every Meal
Safe foods are the foods your child always accepts, pasta, yoghurt, rice crackers, cheese, fruit, etc. When one familiar food is always available, children feel secure enough to explore the new foods beside it. This strategy works wonders at our childcare in East Victoria Park, where children often surprise families by tasting new foods simply because they feel relaxed.
3. Repeated Exposure Is Everything
It can take 15–20 exposures for a toddler to accept a new food. Exposure means:
- seeing it
- touching it
- smelling it
- playing with it
- cooking with it
- licking it
Acceptance takes time. Don’t give up after two tries, consistency is where the magic happens.
4. Make Food Play Part of the Learning
Toddlers learn with their senses, not their logic. So touching, squishing, poking, stirring, dipping, and smelling food helps desensitise their fears.
Try:
- Making fruit faces.
- Veggie stamping.
- “Painting” with yoghurt.
- Sensory bins with pasta or rice.
This breaks down anxiety around food before it ever reaches the plate.
5. Don’t Short-Order Cook
It’s tempting… but preparing separate meals reinforces picky eating long-term. Instead, serve:
- What the family is eating.
- One safe food.
- One or two new or less preferred foods.
If they only eat the safe food, that’s okay. Consistency > perfection.
6. Build Predictable Eating Routines
Toddlers thrive on rhythm. At our Vic Park early learning centre, children eat at similar times each day, which:
- Regulates appetite.
- Reduces grazing.
- Stabilises behaviour.
- Supports better sleep.
Try offering meals and snacks at predictable intervals. It makes a huge difference.
7. Model, Model, Model
Children are far more likely to try something if they see someone they love enjoying it. Sit with them. Eat the same food. Say things like:
🌿 “These carrots are crunchy.”
🌿 “My banana is sweet today.”
No pressure, just positive modelling.
8. Know When to Seek Extra Support
Most picky eating is developmentally normal. But reach out for support if you notice:
- Weight concerns.
- Strong sensory aversions.
- Extreme gagging.
- Refusal of entire food groups.
- Anxiety around food.
We’re always happy to chat with families if you have concerns.
