Simple Sensory Play Ideas for Toddlers (With Easy Recipes Busy Mums Can Make at Home)
Keeping a toddler entertained at home can feel like a full-time job, especially when your days are already full. The good news? Sensory play doesn’t need fancy ingredients, big setups, or hours of prep. In fact, some of the best sensory activities are quick, cheap, and use things already in your pantry.
At Budding Sproutz Miniversity, we use sensory play every day to support fine motor skills, creativity, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. Today we’re sharing a few of our favourite toddler-friendly sensory ideas, all simple enough for busy mums to whip up at home.
These activities are safe, engaging, and perfect for curious little hands.
1. Two-Ingredient Cloud Dough
This one feels like magic and takes under a minute to make.
What you need:
- 2 cups flour
- ¼ cup oil (vegetable, baby oil or coconut oil)
How to make it:
Mix the flour and oil in a bowl until it turns soft and crumbly, like kinetic sand. Add more oil if you want it smoother.
Play ideas:
- Hide toy animals inside and let your toddler “dig” for them.
- Make mini snowballs or pretend cupcakes.
- Add a little food colouring or lavender oil for a twist.
Why toddlers love it:
It’s soft, calming, and endlessly mouldable, perfect for quiet play while you grab a warm coffee.
2. Edible Jelly Sensory Tub (Great for Littles Who Still Mouth Everything)
What you need:
- 2–3 packets of jelly crystals
- Warm water
- A few spoons, cups, and toy animals
How to make it:
Prepare the jelly as normal and let it set overnight. Scoop into a tray and let your toddler explore.
Play ideas:
- Hide toys inside like a “rescue mission”.
- Add spoons for scooping.
- Add ice cubes for a temperature contrast.
Why mums love it:
Zero stress if your toddler tastes it. Minimal mess, maximum fun.
3. Quick Oat Slime (Taste-Safe & Budget Friendly)
What you need:
- 2 cups oats

Play ideas:

- Add spoons and bowls.
- Stir in glitter (eco-friendly) for sparkle.
Why toddlers love it:
It’s squishy, oozy, and super satisfying.
4. Frozen Fruit Sensory Tray
Perfect for hot weather days or when you need 10 minutes to make lunch.
What you need:
- Frozen berries or fruit chunks
